One of the well-known useful methods is the fear appeal. “Fear sells. Fear makes money.” Indeed, the fear appeal is a fantastic marketing tool. However, the question is raised whether fear appeals have any negative drawbacks or not. Then, if the answer is yes, do their cons outweigh their pros? What are necessary restrictions on fear appeals so that customer’s rights and well-being are protected?

Malcolm Gladwell is an author known for works about bias, crime, food, marketing, race,
consumers, and intelligence. He was invited as the speaker for a Ted Talk titled “Choice, happiness, and
spaghetti sauce” published in May 2014. The talk discussed about how consumers now have plenty of
options for one product that serves different tastes, preferences, and situations.
